MERLINS offers basic but good quality, comfortable and well appointed rooms the majority of which have en-suite facilities. Dormitory, double and single rooms are available. The dormitory rooms contain bunkbeds which are ideal for backpackers, independent travellers, students, school groups, touring sports clubs or those just wishing to visit this picturesque part of Wales. Given the value for money we offer we also get regular repaet customers ranging from buisness men to people visiting family and friends. Prices range from £11 for a dormitory bed to £40 for a double room. For these type of customers we act as a bed and breakfast or guest house would.

What Does the Town of Ystradgynlais Have?

Ystradgynlais,in the SWANSEA Valley is a typical small vibrant Welsh Valley town with a range of services including 3 banks, building societies, post office, chemists, hospital and numerous pubs.

History of Ystradgynlais

Ystradgynlais was a very prosperous iron smelting area dating back to Queen Elizabeth 1st times in 1600. David Thomas' continued this success through to the 19th Century. His success with his hot-blast furnace at Ynyscedwyn soon lead to the expansion of the works, with three furnaces burning local anthracite.
News of this development interested the owners of ironworks in America, where there were also large anthracite deposits. After one of their number visited Ynyscedwyn in 1838, the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company offered David Thomas (right) an opportunity to develop an ironworks in Pennsylvania.

Thomas emigrated with his family in June 1839. He was so successful in America that he founded his own Thomas Iron Company at Hokenauqua, which soon became the biggest anthracite iron producer in the USA .
